Throughout January, we are focusing on your METABOLIC MAKEOVER. If you visit healthypeople.com, you’ll find my METABOLIC MAKEOVER mental checklist. I developed it over a decade ago to overcome an eating disorder destroying my life. I desperately needed to break free.  At the time I was inspired by Steven Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and came up with my own checklist of habits of people who are not only lean, but exude good health, vitality and genuine happiness. That’s what I wanted. I cultivated a list of habits typical of lean, healthy and energetic people, but decided NOT to be perfect with it, but to stay conscious of it.

At the time, dieting was the “in” thing to do… Scarsdale Diet, Grapefruit Diet, Liquid Protein Diet, Peanut Butter Diet, Cabbage Soup Diet… OMG. I could go on and on. The idea was to be perfect. Follow these diets perfectly. Achieve perfect results. Be the talk of the town because of how perfectly fabulous you look. That was the thinking of the time. PERFECTION.

I struggled with this concept of perfection…. half of me WANTED to be. The other half wanted to rebel. I developed this checklist with the idea that staying productive made me truly happy. Happiness is what I wanted. So, all I needed to do, to be happy, was accomplish at least ONE item on my checklist, each and every day. And, in doing so, I could officially feel good about myself. Even if I could only accomplish one thing on the list, at least I was walking in the right direction. I was ON the path to good health and well being.

We all know… none of us ever stand still in life. We are either becoming stronger or weaker at any given moment. This metamorphosis, from minute to minute, is dependent on thoughts we think… breathing habits… level of hydration… how well exercised we are… how well nourished we are… We ALL have certain basic daily needs to attend to. Staying focused on trusting ourselves to meet our most basic needs, every single day as a ritual of life, allows everything else to just fall into place. We need wholesome food, fresh water, fresh air, sunlight, colorful nature. These are basic human needs. To achieve a sense of dynamic balance and peace of mind, we walk the path of good health and vitality, by choice. It is a daily choice we make because it feels good to stay in touch with our needs and honor our heart’s song of life.

Yet, most of us walk around completely disconnected from what we need. The METABOLIC MAKEOVER Checklist is designed to remind you of what you really need, to function at your optimal best. It is the core of my book, METABOLIC MAKEOVER, which I first released in 1997. I do plan on releasing a 4th Edition this year, so stay tuned. But, the point I’d like to make, is you can change and alter this checklist to make it work for you. Add new habits to list or change it any way you wish. Even if you embrace only half this checklist you’ll be feeling a whole lot better!!!
